Dralion Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: June 27-July 1 2012

It isn't skill that sets Cirque du Soleil apart. There are local artists who can match or beat the feats in this touring show. What the Canadian juggernaut excels at is spectacle. Just watch as a circular catwalk gyrates lewdly on its descent to the ground. Dralion presents circus as arena rock. The Asia-themed extravaganza—which has been on the road, with brief hiatuses, since 1999—packages a sculpted, smiling, Lycra-clad cast performing acts that involve juggling, trampoline work, and, anticlimactically, skipping rope. But the best bits are the touching and surprising clown interludes, which forgo the contrived East-meets-West motif altogether. —Keith Griffith
