Montreal literary comics publisher Drawn & Quarterly presents a triple bill of recently published author-artists. The stories in Kevin Huizenga's Curses, featuring an alter ego named Glenn Ganges, are sophisticated and thought-provoking, often drawing on scholarly source texts to examine mystical visions, the existence of hell, and yes, curses. But Gabrielle Bell's diaristic Lucky uses a poor-me confessional tone to relate her daily life in Brooklyn, full of bad performance art and shallow NYU yuppies; fortunately there are plenty of cool fellow artists to commiserate with. Chicagoan Anders Nilsen has a couple new offerings. Reading Big Questions 9 is like having a fever dream while awake, with its talking birds as observers at the aftermath of a plane crash and a snake and owl philosophizing about the predator-prey relationship and the end of life. Don't Go Where I Can't Follow is a touching collection of postcards, letters, photographs, and comics that Nilsen assembled in memory of his fiancee, Cheryl Weaver, who died of cancer in 2005. From a very funny letter he wrote to his sister about a camping trip involving a battle with raccoons to a sequence of drawings and text recounting the scattering of Weaver's ashes at Promontory Point, where they were to be married, it's heartbreaking, beautiful, and inspiring. a Thu 12/7, 7 PM, Quimby's, 1854 W.
