Dreamgirls Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks New Review (Theater and Comedy) Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Tuesdays-Sundays. Continues through Jan. 31 2010

This electrifying touring revival of the 1981 musical features dynamic singing and dancing, slick but never overwhelming multimedia design, eye-popping costumes, and fast-paced, dramatically charged storytelling. Robert Longbottom's production traces the professional and emotional journeys of African-American performers trying to cross over to mainstream success while still staying true to their souls--and their soul. Expanded with material from the 2006 movie, the Henry Krieger-Tom Eyen score is a great vehicle for powerhouse vocals by Moya Angela, Syesha Mercado, and Adrienne Warren as members of a Supremes-esque vocal trio; Trevon Davis as a songwriter; Chaz Lamar Shepherd as a visionary but unscrupulous manager; and Chester Gregory as an R&B star in decline. This is intense showbiz soap opera in the classic mold of A Star Is Born, an archetypal saga of rags to riches and self-destruction to self-renewal that also charts stylistic shifts in pop culture during the years from "He's a Rebel" to "Love to Love You Baby." --Albert Williams
