Dredd | Chicago Reader

Rated R 95 minutes 2012

Though advertised as trashy genre entertainment, this 2012 adaptation of the long-running British cult comic was made by some fairly reputable people: screenwriter Alex Garland wrote the novel The Beach and the screen adaptation of Never Let Me Go; Pete Travis directed the historical dramas Omagh (2004) and Endgame (2009); and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle has shot numerous films for Danny Boyle and Lars von Trier. They bring surprising seriousness and nuance to the post-apocalyptic scenario, in which all of U.S. society occupies a single megalopolis stretching from Boston to Washington, DC, and roving law officers are allowed to execute criminals at will. In their hands Dredd is no hero but an instrument of brute punishment in a society with no room for moral equivocation. With Karl Urban and Olivia Thirlby.
