Dribbling Fate

Landscape and plot figure unobtrusively yet poignantly in this understated 1998 narrative, a meditation on unfulfilled dreams. A Cape Verde bar owner visits his estranged son in Portugal, mainly because he wants to see the soccer finals there. Having excelled at the sport in his youth, he now coaches promising young players, whom he may be overburdening with his own blighted ambition. His last hurrah elegantly reveals the depth of his regret and whether he has the capacity to move on. Director Fernando Vendrell wrote the screenplay with Carla Baptista; with Carlos Germano. 77 min.
