Duets for My Valentine | Park West | Dance | Chicago Reader

Duets for My Valentine Brief Run (Theater) Critic's Choice Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Sat., Feb. 13 2010

This show for lovers is back for its 13th year, this time under the curatorial eye of Chicago Dance Crash. Among the ten companies taking what one artistic director calls Park West's "cozy" stage is DanceWorks Chicago in I Do, I Do Again, I Still Do. Choreographed by Lar Lubovitch company member Jay Franke, the light and clever duet features the same two lovers dancing to the same two-minute song, "Blue Danube Rock," during their courtship, at midlife, and in old age. Expert shtick by Rebecca Niziol and James Johnson is the hook as the couple changes completely--and yet not at all. Chicago Dance Crash, Joel Hall Dancers, BreakDance Chicago, Culture Shock Chicago, and Corpo Dance Company all present premieres; the other four are Chicago Tap Theatre's Red and Wolf, Jeff Hancock's Remain/s, Elements Contemporary Ballet's Angel, and Same Planet Different World Dance Theatre's Sextet (which is made up of duets). Have a drink and dance with your valentine--and/or a performer--at the afterparty. --Laura Molzahn
