In this sword-and-sorcerer story two thieves, a mage, a dwarf, and an elf join forces to defend the political goals of the adolescent empress of Izmer (Thora Birch) against arch villain Jeremy Irons, who spends most of his two minutes of screen time gesturing and yelling menacingly. The plot somehow manages to be both hackneyed and convoluted as the heroes go in search of a precious stone that gives its possessor control over an army of flying red dragons. These creatures ultimately fill the sky over the imaginary city during a computer-generated battle between good and evil whose outcome would be entirely inconsequential if it didn't herald the end of the movie. Dungeon master Courtney Solomon directed a screenplay by Topper Lilien and Carroll Cartwright based on the role-playing game invented in 1974; with Justin Whalin, Marlon Wayans, Zoe McLellan, Bruce Payne, Lee Arenberg, and Kristen Wilson. 105 min.
