DVS1, Traxx, Tevo Howard Recommended Soundboard

When: Sat., Dec. 24, 10 p.m. 2011

For years now I've had to endure the more-is-more ethos that's taken dance music from bloghouse to nu-trance to brostep, so the last thing I need is some DJ getting in my face about wanting me to "get down." That's probably one reason I've found the SoundCloud mixes by veteran Minneapolis DJ Zak Khutoretsky (aka DVS1) so refreshing lately. A student of the transistor-driven salad days of house and techno, Khutoretsky is a ruthlessly minimalist composer who keeps his tracks ascetically sparse and his synth and drum sounds tight and precise. But that's not to suggest that he's got an anhedonic streak—even at their leanest his songs bang harder and funkier than most of today's arena EDM. —Miles Raymer Traxx and Tevo Howard open.

Price: $12, $10 before midnight
