Dying City Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through March 8 2009

There's compelling theater buried in Christopher Shinn's 2006 play, which enjoyed successes in London and New York. Feckless Peter visits his reclusive sister-in-law Kelly on the anniversary of his twin brother Craig's death in the Iraq war. Each harbors a troubling secret about Craig; Kelly doesn't dare reveal hers, but Peter, purportedly making a friendly call, brings irrefutable evidence of his, knowing the truth will crush her. With such inherently explosive material, it's baffling that Shinn spends two-thirds of this 80-minute piece evading it by indulging in meandering, irrelevant exposition. When he finally starts dramatizing his characters' predicaments, the play starts to matter, enhanced by searing performances from Coburn Gross and Nicole Wiesner, under Jason Loewith's empathic direction. --Justin Hayford
