Ecotopia | Chicago Reader

In this old-fashioned musical comedy from Turkey, a group of "eco-anarchists" from Istanbul move to an isolated backwater to set up a farming commune; interspersed among the familiar (but still winning) bits of fish-out-of-water comedy are some thoughtful observations about democratic responsibility and environmental stewardship. Writer-director Yuksel Aksu shows up intermittently as an onscreen narrator, and his laid-back, hippie-ish presence sets an agreeable tone for the action. The cast maintains this tone with relative ease (though a few of the players oversell Aksu's gentle humor), and the songs are enjoyable too. In Turkish with subtitles.
