Edge of Night

A would-be pop singer in Athens (Athena Maximou) leaves her grocery-clerk boyfriend (Nikos Kouris) and travels north to perform at tawdry roadside clubs in this glossy 1999 love story. The leads are attractive but fail to overcome the insipid script, which serves up fake sentiment, silly coincidences, numerous platitudes, and perplexing quotes from classical literature. Director Nikos Panayotopoulos provides some glimpses of life in rural Greece and touches on the discontent of those on the fringe, but neither element rescues the film. 112 min.
