Eighteen Springs

Ann Hui?s 12th feature (1997), set in Shanghai during the 30s and 40s, focuses on the romance between a factory worker from a once well-to-do family and the son of a wealthy merchant, which is ultimately destroyed by the reputation of her sister (Anita Mui), who became a prostitute to support the family. It?s a classic Asian melodrama setup, delivered with grace, feeling, and style, and given an interesting spin by the fact that the romantic leads (Leon Lai and Wu Chien-lien) alternate as narrators. Probably not a masterpiece, but solid work.
