Einsturzende Neubauten—Halber Mensch

Shot during a 1985 tour of Japan, these music videos derived from the German group's Halber Mensch LP are a cut above MTV fodder. Filmmaker Sogo Ishii shot a staged performance at a huge abandoned warehouse, then cut in concert footage and enigmatic scenes that combine Butoh dancers and eerie gestural movement from various band members. Some of the percussionistic posturing—whaling on sheet metal with rods and power tools—seems silly, but this still delivers a powerful visual counterpart to the band's proto-industrial music. 58 min.
