El Leyton

The residents of a Chilean fishing village are thrown into turmoil by the unexpected appearance of a man presumed dead in a drowning incident. The villager in question, Leyton (Juan Pablo Saez), is known as a smooth-talking womanizer whose affair with his fishing partner's bride (Siboney Lo) led to murder. The neighbors want to extract revenge for his perceived treachery, but Leyton tries to set the record straight, revealing the true story in a series of flashbacks. Directed by Gonzalo Justiniano, this 2002 drama is hampered by clumsy attempts at comic charm; the characters often come across as buffoons, though Lo gives a nicely understated performance. In Spanish with subtitles. 95 min.
