El Mari Chi Chi: A Robert Rodriguez Burlesque Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Saturdays. Continues through March 31 2012

Previous Gorilla Tango Theatre burlesques have parodied subjects like Super Mario Bros., Star Wars, and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. The occasion for satirical stripping this time around is Robert Rodriguez's 1995 Tarantino-esque cult film Desperado. Mexican drug wars and Salma Hayek offer steamy source material for the troupe, and they perkily exploit it. But if the stripping is half the fun, the other half is the incongruity of seeing Professor Jones or Princess Leia doing the stripping. For all the cast's suggestive handling of the Mariachi's guitar case, Desperado isn't iconic enough to support their genial acting, loud-and-proud tassel-twirling, and many of the jokes. I never thought following the plot at a burlesque show would be so taxing. —Asher Klein
