Electric Dreams | Chicago Reader

Electric Dreams

A comedy about a home computer that goes haywire, develops a soul, begins writing Giorgio Moroder music (at least there's one credible point in the scenario), and attempts to steal away the hero's girl friend. There are all kinds of disassociated, disturbing ideas floating around in the screenplay—everything from overtones of Dr. Mabuse to intimations of incest—none of which survive the filmmakers' decision to play everything for cloying cuteness. The director, Steve Barron, comes from rock video, and that's about all you need to know; I've never seen more state-of-the-art technical gimcrackery brought to bear to less effect. With Lenny Von Dohlen, Virginia Madsen, Maxwell Caulfield, and the voice of Bud Cort.
