Commissioned to provide visual accompaniment for David Lang's musical composition “Men,” Matt Mullican assembled this 2005 montage of found footage that was shot in New York around 1935 by someone named D.G. Oswald. The film offers only fleeting glances of its lively subject matter (the flashing lights of Manhattan at night, chunks of ice floating on the wintry Hudson, a Times Square celebration, beer drinkers at Coney Island, professional wrestlers at Madison Square Garden) and, paired with the funereal music, seems to represent an elegy for simpler times. For this screening Lang's piece will be performed by Chicago's own Maverick Ensemble. The running time is about an hour.
