Aspiring fashion designer Jay McCarroll, who triumphed in season one of the Bravo reality show Project Runway, tries to “make that leap from reality-TV designer to real-life designer” in this irreverent documentary by Michael Selditch and Robert Tate. Despite his instant fame, McCarroll finds that establishing himself in the complex, highly competitive New York fashion scene is no easy task. Selditch and Tate follow him as he sketches designs, scrounges for money, negotiates with a Chinese company to manufacture his clothes, tracks down shoemakers and jewelry artists, grooms models, hires a public relations firm, pitches his line to retail buyers, and—oh yeah—commissions this movie. His campy, sometimes snide wit is enhanced by Tate's kinetic cinematography, which captures the whirling feel of Manhattan's streets, skyscrapers, and subways. 103 min.
