When: Fri., Dec. 26, 10 p.m. 2008

This summer the local soul and R & B band ELI JONES had to cancel some major tour plans (they’d just self-released a strong debut album, Make It Right) so singer Stefanie Berecz could take time off to have a baby. The other seven members, including two guitarists and a three-piece horn section, took the opportunity to hone their skills as a unit—they must’ve realized it could only be a boon if they learned to work a crowd without their charismatic front woman. (“She’s what sets us apart from being just a bar band,” guitarist and sometime singer Chris Corsale writes on the band’s MySpace blog.) When Berecz returned in the fall, they met her big, fluid voice with the full-bodied support it needs, striking just the right tone on everything from the bluesy “Afraid Not to Die” to the sticky-sweet “Candlelight and Satin Sheets.” —Monica Kendrick
