Elling Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

Call it The Really Odd Couple. Simon Bent's English-language stage version of a screenplay--which was based, in turn, on Blood Brothers, a 1996 novel by Norwegian writer Ingvar Ambjornsen--takes the fussbudget/slob dynamics of Neil Simon's scenario and raises the stakes by making the roomies former inmates of a mental institution. Steve Scott's staging allows Andrew Jessop's mama's-boy Elling and Peter Oyloe's sex-obsessed Kjell (he puts the "id" in "idiot") to share some warm, if wholly predictable, interludes. Even so, there's a lingering sense that we're meant to laugh at, not with, the emotional handicaps of these two walking sit-com devices. --Kerry Reid
