Elvisbride: Some Prepared Remarks to Clarify the Impending Jubilation Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks The Short List (Theater)

When: Fridays, Saturdays. Continues through Feb. 28 2009

The centerpiece of this "tonal operetta for voice, orchestra, and analog television" is a video of Colm O'Reilly as a stone-faced U.S. senator at a surreal confirmation hearing, struggling to read a prepared statement about "the day in question." He's continually sidetracked by a medical condition that causes his eyes to sink ever deeper into his head, but reassures an invisible committee that it gives him a unique perspective on the world. O'Reilly's meticulous, arch performance amplifies myriad subtleties in Matt Test and Jayita Bhattacharya's enticingly elusive text. By contrast, the quartet of live performers--hamstrung by perfunctory blocking, uncomfortably self-conscious singing, and challenging acoustics--can't make two hours of belabored vignettes about Elvis impersonators and roadside diners coalesce into much beyond half-finished thoughts. Part of the Rhinoceros Theater Festival. --Justin Hayford
