Emma Unmatched Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: July 14-31 2011

Characters and situations from Jane Austen's Emma are transported from Regency England to present-day Manhattan in this new romantic comedy by Madiha Syed and Rosemary Medrano. Charming but clueless, hotel heiress Emma Woodhouse first gives her mousy friend Harriet a makeover then makes a mess by meddling in her love life. As in the novel, Emma thinks she's got everything figured out but actually misses key facts staring her in the face. Syed and Medrano throw in pop culture references and mildly salty language but fail to make a pressing case for the change in milieu—a far cry from Amy Heckerling's 1995 movie, Clueless, which brilliantly translated the material into a contemporary idiom. Syed's staging, meanwhile, is simultaneously glacial and tepid. —Zac Thompson
