When Michigan native Keith Latinen started Empire! Empire! in 2007, he couldn’t find anyone interested in releasing his resplendent, dramatic emo. He solved that issue by launching Count Your Lucky Stars Records, which released his group’s debut, What It Takes to Move Forward, in 2009. At that time few noticed it—Latinen and a small, largely disconnected group of people were still cementing the foundation of emo’s underground fourth-wave scene. What It Takes has since been a guiding light for the new community that took shape; its twisting guitars and hurricane-sized choruses offer a refined reinvention on 90s emo and entice newcomers to test the waters. The original vinyl version of What It Takes became a hot commodity in less than five years, and in the fall of 2013 a used copy sold on eBay for a little more than $200. Empire! Empire! reissued the LP in late December of last year as a belated five-year anniversary celebration, and the band will play the record in full tonight. Given the album’s history, this is less an exercise in nostalgia than a victory lap. —Leor Galil
