Empire Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays, Saturdays. Continues through Feb. 14 2013

Writer/director Paul Carr can't seem to find a tone for this piece about two men shipwrecked in the middle of the Pacific Trash Vortex—a real-life, Texas-size island of garbage floating in the middle of the ocean. They open informationally, spouting ecological factoids, move on to underbaked Beckettian commentary on the nature of mankind . . . and then the prop-comedy bits begin. Able to walk around freely on top of the debris (a cheat that nullifies the sense of claustrophobia or urgency), Nick Leininger's Sam and Matt Rieger's Chuck exchange sarcastic quips, toss around melodramatic sentiments, and ham it up with a blow-up sex doll. Inasmuch as Carr's attempts at substance are quickly exhausted, the doll has a lot to fill in. Presented as part of Rhinofest. —Dan Jakes
