Engram Sepals (Melodramas 1994-2000)

Lewis Klahr calls his seven short films a history of “American intoxication—both sexually and substance wise—from the second world war into the 1970's.” References to LSD, alcohol, love affairs, and anonymous sex abound in these cut-out animations (and one live-action film), but Klahr is most intoxicated by pop-culture images and songs, presented here in dizzying profusion, and his fevered mix of liquor bottles, wallpapered rooms, gorgeous women, and erect penises almost guarantees that his characters will fall prey to sensual pleasure. The dual nature of mass culture—achingly seductive but ultimately unfulfilling—has never been more passionately presented or incisively analyzed. 81 min.
