Epidemic

An early effort by Danish director Lars von Trier (Breaking the Waves, Dancer in the Dark), this black-and-white horror movie (1987) stars von Trier and cowriter Niels Vorsel as a screenwriting team who've lost their script for a feature called “The Cop and the Whore” to a computer foul-up. They scramble to complete a new screenplay, for a horror flick called “Epidemic,” before their producer returns from the U.S., but they're interrupted by a real plague they may have called into being. Aside from the Pirandellian games and some interplay of different film stocks there isn't much going on here, though von Trier rewards the patient with a strange and horrifying climax. In subtitled Danish and dubbed English. 106 min.
