Restaurant Details

Erik’s Delicatessen, located a few steps from the Oak Park Avenue Green Line stop, has been a local institution since opening in the late 70s. It's where neighborhood families go after T-ball games, and young people gather for sandwiches and excellent homemade potato chips, offered free of charge to every customer. You order and pay at the register, then carry your tray and a “number on a stick” to one of many simple wooden tables, some inexplicably topped with red beach umbrellas. When your food is ready, a runner brings it out to you. The menu board lists many variations on the basic sandwich, including croissants, panini, wraps, quesadillas, burgers, and the toppings of your choice on a croissant. Most of the entrees are served with a generous mound of hand-cut skin-on fries. There are also munchie foods (like chicken wings and fingers), a range of prepared salads (such as tuna and taco), and a do-it-yourself salad bar that sells greenery by the pound. Ice cream sundaes and cones are available, as are beer and wine. On Saturday and Sunday, you can get breakfast: eggs done in all the usual ways, pancakes, waffles, skillets, and the like.
