Ernst Reijseger With Gunga Purves

OK, OK, so at first the idea of a cello-bass duo performing "free jazz and Afro-Scottish folk music" -- on a visit here from Holland, no less -- sounds a bit daunting. But keep in mind that: cellist Ernst Reijseger, one of Europe's more engaging young improvisers, maintains a sense of wit as he goes about wringing a rainbow of sounds from his instrument (in his hands it telescopes from a bass to a guitar); percussionist Gunga Purves, who has performed music for the experimental Footbarn theater troupe of Ireland, boasts the kind of graceful madness that allows the creation of a sonic universe from a batch of drums; and what I've heard of their music seems unburdened by the weighted portent that often attaches to such arcane combos. Also, they manage to swing. Tonight, 8 PM, Jazz Record Mart, 11 W. Grand; 222-1467.
