Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare

Rated PG-13 99 minutes 2012

As some have argued, the Affordable Health Care Act should be called the Affordable Health Insurance Act—it leaves in place the fee-for-service structure that eats up more than 17 percent of our gross domestic product every year, and it does little to incentivize the sort of healthy behavior that keeps people from getting sick. This documentary by Matthew Heineman and Susan Froemke diagnoses the problem all over again but seldom mentions Obamacare—perhaps wisely, given the fact that our political will has been exhausted— instead focusing on how businesses and individuals need to change. The movie's key lesson is that Americans need to learn the word no. They need to tell their doctors they don’t want every conceivable test or prescription available and tell themselves to stop drinking, smoking, and eating junk every day. Best of luck with that.
