Funeral-doom long-haulers Esoteric, from Black Sabbath’s hometown of Birmingham, UK, are unsurprisingly unprolific—you can expect a full-length from them every three to four years, and they’re still working their seventh, the 2011 double CD Paragon of Dissonance (Season of Mist). But consider the corpse flower, which blooms for just two days after six to ten years; you come out ahead with the band’s flavor of morbid majesty. Esoteric’s plodding, surging, perpetually climaxing waves of gothic fury are built for endurance, not speed. Carefully layered and painstakingly plotted, most of their tracks last more than ten minutes, creeping toward 20, and their slow-burn builds draw you in so deeply that even at that length they can seem to end abruptly. Like a good novel, they’re just as long as they need to be. —Monica Kendrick Velnias and Saturnalia Temple open.
