An ambient-music series may seem like an odd venue for a drummer to celebrate the release of his first solo LP, but Mike Weis isn't your typical drummer. Best known as a member of Zelienople and half of a duo with guitarist Scott Tuma, Weis is just as adept at shaping atmospheric sound swells as he is at laying down a backbeat. He composed Loop Current/Raft (Barge) under circumstances many percussionists would find paralyzing: after becoming a father, Weis's chief opportunities for writing and recording came during his son's naps. Rather than wake the baby by laying into his drums, he created the album's two side-length pieces by layering muzzy field recordings, steady cymbal washes, subliminal tom rolls, and stark strikes of brushes on bells. In each piece he arranges small, highly detailed sounds against an undulating, electronically blurred background that seems to stretch toward the horizon. For this set Weis will use a small drum kit, a homemade plank guitar, and loop pedals to improvise something that's similar in spirit, if not in content, to the album. —Bill Meyer Euonia headlines; Weis and Wes Imel open.
