The British musical comedy star Jessie Matthews in one of her most popular vehicles—in fact, the only one that's really known on this side of the pond. (She was directed by Alfred Hitchcock in Waltzes From Vienna that same year, 1934.) Tall, dark, and thin—a somewhat sexier Julie Andrews—she plays the illegitimate daughter of a music-hall star who breaks into show business by posing as her miraculously rejuvenated mother. The score includes songs by Rodgers and Hammerstein; the direction, by Victor Saville, has a lightness rare in British films. 90 min.
