Every Song Is About Me

Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) was Woody Allen's love letter to Spain, and Spain reciprocates with this blatantly Allen-esque romantic comedy (2010). An insecure bookseller in Madrid (Oriol Vila) suppresses his literary ambitions and channels his creative impulses into his love life, obsessively reediting his feelings toward his long-suffering girlfriend (Barbara Lennie) and finding new inspiration in dalliances with other young women. Director Jonas Trueba reproduces Allen's trademark mix of urbanity and navel-gazing, but the film's structure is problematic; though it's organized into chapters, flashbacks confuse the chronology of events, which renders the protagonist's actions baffling and irksome. In Spanish with subtitles.
