To the readers of the Daily Herald and the Kane County Chronicle, isn't the exchange over industry awards [Hot Type, October 31] much ado about nothing?
Do readers buy papers based on something as nebulous as an award given by the Associated Press Editors Association? I'm not being sarcastic, just really wary.
Speaking for myself, I've read my share of award-winning papers (and columnists) and generally can't figure out what all the fuss is about. As far as I can tell, the awards are little more than affectionate pats on the back by colleagues, as difficult to achieve as the "participant" ribbon in a preteen swim meet--and to the public, worth even less. I can't imagine anyone making a subscription decision on that basis.
