Everything Freezes: Another Winter's Tale Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through April 5 2009

Like Sideshow Theatre Company's sole previous offering--a one-man retelling of Dante's Inferno--this adaptation of Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale aims to stay true to the spirit if not the letter of the original. The language has been updated, the cast reduced, the plot futzed with, but the play remains, in essence, the fraught story of a royal family destroyed by jealousy and then miraculously reconciled. Coadapters Jonathan L. Green and Walt McGough have an excellent grasp of the tensions inherent in tragicomedy, but they also repeat themselves and tend to prefer long-winded speeches to dramatic action. Green's staging, which starts out nicely balanced between whimsy and sincerity, runs out of ideas about halfway through and grows increasingly dour as the evening drags on. --Zac Thompson
