When: Mon., Oct. 26, 9 p.m. 2015

When the great Bay Area garage-rock exodus to Los Angeles began a few years back, four stalwarts who were left behind intelligently decided to form Male Gaze. Guitarists Matt Jones and Adam Finken of synthy garage trio Blasted Canyons, bassist Mark Kaiser of noise punks Mayyors, and drummer Adam Cimino take the frenzied twists and turns of their old projects and boil them down to simple, concentrated punk. Nearly all seven songs from March’s Gale Maze 12-inch (out on Castle Face Records, the imprint run by John Dwyer of Thee Oh Sees) follow the same tried-and-true formula: kick it all off with a punchy drumbeat and hyperfuzzed bass and then let a wall of blown-out guitars flood the mix. Jones sings in a smooth, sultry croon, and his sense of melody makes these jams shine. The weirdo zones that Blasted Canyons and Mayyors once dominated were some of my favorites, but hearing these guys crank out a high-octane version of pop music is endlessly entertaining—plus Gale Maze has massive replay quality. The foursome kill live, and this is their first time touring the midwest. Not to be missed.
