Excess Baggage

Emily (Alicia Silverstone) acts out because she's the neglected daughter of a billionaire, and Christopher Walken, in yet another reprise of his smoldering psycho role, plays her guardian angel—an uncle figure who watches over her because her real father doesn't care. This pointlessly contrived crime comedy has one engrossing scene in which Emily and Vincent (Benicio Del Toro), a car thief, slowly, defensively test each other's romantic potential during a bout of drunkenness, and occasionally a moody vista or striking example of interior production design reflects the wistful and slippery emotions of the apparently destined lovers. But the bland plot involves nested crimes gone awry and a bad car chase or two, and its bulky, styleless exposition is hard to wait out. Marco Brambilla directed a screenplay by Max Adams, Dick Clement, and Ian La Frenais.
