Quinn Tsan’s powerful, woeful voice can do to your heart what subzero wind chills do to the exposed parts of your face. It works wonders on her debut EP, Good Winter, which the Chicago singer-songwriter self-released in November—on “Mistress Song,” for instance, she evokes the quiet suffering of a woman on the wrong side of a love triangle with the smallest changes in inflection. Tsan recruited 11 locals to fill out the sound of Good Winter, including Social Experiment trumpet player Nico Segal and two of his former bandmates in Kids These Days, multi-instrumentalists Macie Stewart and Liam Cunningham; they add subtle chamber-pop embellishments to its lush, devastating acoustic-folk arrangements. I’m sure these songs are just as spellbinding when Tsan performs without all those extra personnel—I can’t remember what she played when I first caught her a few years ago at Salonathon, but the distilled emotion in her beautiful singing has stayed stuck in my head. —Leor Galil
