Exit, Pursued by a Bear Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through July 15 2012

Lauren Gunderson's 2011 revenge comedy is a topsy-turvy version of Extremities, the William Mastrosimone play in which a woman manages to tie up her would-be rapist only to get flak about it from her roommates. Here, abused wife Nan has the full cooperation of stripper gal-pal Sweetheart and gay buddy Simon as she enacts her version of justice against redneck hubby Kyle—taping him to a chair, surrounding him with deer meat, and letting the bears find him. There are moments of goofy charm in Cassy Sanders's staging for Theatre Seven of Chicago, but the metatheatrical winks and nods grow tiresome, particularly as the titular stage direction from Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale gets stretched and pulled on the metaphorical rack. The plot itself is far too predetermined to contain any surprises. —Kerry Reid
