Facing Windows

An attractive young woman (Giovanna Mezzogiorno) trapped in a dead-end marriage to a feckless laborer (Filippo Nigro) is shaken from her unhappy complacence when her husband insists on taking in an amnesiac old man they find on the street (Massimo Girotti). Her irritation with the stranger gives way to compassion and finally deep regard as his past begins to emerge, illuminating her own infatuation with a handsome neighbor (Raoul Bova). The latter situation gets a little soapy, but the dismal working-class milieu and the measured performances by Mezzogiorno and Girotti (a venerable Italian actor who died last year) bolster the sense of solidity. Ferzan Ozpetek (Steam: The Turkish Bath) directed this 2003 drama from a script cowritten with Gianni Romoli. In Italian with subtitles. 102 min.
