Fake Lake | Welles Park, swimming pool | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader

Fake Lake Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Sept. 19 2008

It's a testament to Sharon Greene's piece about her camping trip to Lake Powell--and to Halena Kays's tight ensemble--that the decision to stage it in and around the Welles Park pool never seems gimmicky. Rather, the setting underscores the fact that although Greene and her friends went there to enjoy nature, Lake Powell is man-made--a gigantic swimming pool. In true Neo-Futurist form, Greene leavens the autobiographical material with plenty of information about Lake Powell and the crisis in the west that's causing its water level to drop year by year. Everyone in the five-person cast displays moments of considerable grace and power, and Greene, in particular, has a likable, unforced stage presence. --Jack Helbig
