Falling: A Wake Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Saturdays. Continues through April 14 2012

Rivendell Theatre Ensemble inaugurates its new 50-seat Edgewater storefront with this moving if unsustained one-act by Gary Kirkham. A middle-aged rural couple's serene night under the stars (lighting and set design by Jason Fassl and Linda Buchanen, beautifully expanding the intimate space) is violently interrupted when wreckage from an overhead commercial plane plummets to the family property. Among the debris: a young man, dead, unmoved from his seat. In the long wait for authorities to arrive, Dad springs into practical mode; Mom acts as protector of their boy. As a married couple under eerie, trying circumstances, Mark Ulrich and Jane Baxter Miller are convincing and subtle, even when Kirkham's script pushes the boundaries of what is haunting and what borders on absurd. —Dan Jakes
