Fame: The Musical Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks New Review (Theater and Comedy) The Short List (Theater)

When: Saturdays, Sundays. Continues through July 22 2012

Just like the teenage knockabouts in this 1988 musical based on a hit film, I was part of a high school staging of Romeo and Juliet. But it was the audience rather than the story that was giving me flashbacks when I saw Real Clear Productions' revival: a different bunch of supporters erupted in applause at the end of each cast member's showcase number, the way parents would at a class show. Joe Marabotti's ensemble consists for the most part of talented singers who can't act; they do good work on the big songs but struggle with Jose Fernandez's insubstantial dramatic vignettes. Between its insipid moralizing and its serial-spotlight format, Fame is ideal for student recitals, but an odd choice for grown-up professionals. —Keith Griffith
