Family Diary

An unemployed journalist (Marcello Mastroianni) recalls the life and premature death of his fraternal twin (Jacques Perrin) in this 1962 Italian feature. Director Valerio Zurlini said that he “purposely abolished camera movements” in order to emphasize the dialogue, and the result is an austere, moody remembrance. Predictably, the pretty twin is the one who's struck down, yet he'd never really found a career, and the film's static compositions intensify the sense of failure projected by Perrin?s and Mastroianni's sharply focused performances. 115 min.
