Far From the Madding Crowd | Chicago Reader

Far From the Madding Crowd

Masterpiece Theatre on the big screen, this John Schlesinger effort adds up to nothing despite a literate screenplay by Frederic Raphael (Two for the Road, Eyes Wide Shut) and fine cinematography by Nicolas Roeg (before he directed Performance and Walkabout). Thomas Hardy was not the most dynamic novelist in English literature, but this sluggish 1967 film still does him a serious disservice. With Julie Christie, Peter Finch, Terence Stamp, and Alan Bates.
