Stacy Keach is a down-and-out fighter trying for a comeback at the age of 29, and Jeff Bridges is a likable, simpleminded youngster on the way up. They meet in the squalid environment of Stockton, California, and it becomes clear that neither of them is going anywhere. John Huston's 1972 restatement of his theme of perpetual loss is intelligently understated, though the recessive camera compositions put an unnecessary distance between the viewer and the characters. Well acted by all, including Susan Tyrrell, Candy Clark, and Nick Colasanto. 100 min.
