This low-key local quintet just self-released its first full-length, The Way We Echo (it’s available on iTunes or via the band’s MySpace page), and though it’s not the kind of record that throws itself at you, it definitely deserves your attention. Back in the day guitarist David Johnson and bassist G. Allen Johnson (they’re brothers) played in Very Secretary with Braid drummer Roy Ewing and the One Up Downstairs with Mike Kinsella, but now their bandmates are violist Jessica Butler, drummer Scott Venvertloh, and singer Alison Rich—whose sweet, clear voice, which sometimes hints at Sandy Denny or Joni Mitchell, brings a wise polish to slinky, dreamy tunes like “We Echo” and “Catworks.” Favorite Saints headline this enormous benefit show for the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, emceed by Ratso of Chic-a-Go-Go; Blasted Diplomats, the Ellie Maybe Holiday Experience, Radar Eyes, John Greenfield, Kim, Quietly Mine, the Dolce Veeta Band, Eiren Caffall, Sssssnakes, Oishi, and John Battles open. —Monica Kendrick
