Produced by Merchant-Ivory, this adaptation by Christopher Neame of an H.E. Bates novel, set in industrial England in the late 19th century, is about the quest of a young woman (Embeth Davidtz) for the lover who abandoned her (Greg Wise), and her involvement with a family with whom she finds shelter along the way. Christopher Menaul directed; with Tom Bell, Gemma Jones, James Purefoy, Kenneth Anderson, and Ben Chaplin.
