I Am My Own Wife

"Given the reputations involved, and its fascinating subject matter, it's startling how unsatisfying this promising piece is," says Reader critic Justin Hayford of this monodrama by Doug Wright, whose play Quills dramatized the life of the Marquis de Sade. Wright's solo show about Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, who lived openly as a transgendered woman in Berlin under the Nazi and Communist regimes, is offered in a workshop tryout prior to a planned New York engagement; Jefferson Mays stars under the direction of Moises Kaufman, author of Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde and The Laramie Project. "Despite numerous interviews with Charlotte over two years, Wright hasn't brought her story to life," says Hayford. $20.
