Field of Souls Recommended The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through July 31 2011

When a black soldier returns to Chicago after the Korean war, he expects a hero's welcome. What he gets instead is intolerance and a community unimpressed by a uniform. Darlette McAlpin's script feints toward a family-centered, flag-waving drama, but provides something more provocative and sophisticated instead. Discussions of north-side/south-side tensions are discomfiting and relevant, and the greater theme of duty is boldly and thoughtfully handled. Runako Jahi's staging asserts that patriotism isn't always synonymous with a reverence for freedom. --Dan Jakes

Price: $30, Thursdays $10
